The first superstar pinball manufacturer. D. Gottlieb & Co. / Premier Technology

1. Gottlieb Builds the Pinball Boom

At Evolution Pinball, we see D. Gottlieb & Co. as the first true superstar pinball manufacturer. Founded in Chicago in 1927, Gottlieb helped turn coin-operated amusement from a novelty into a fixture in neighborhood bars, arcades, bowling alleys, and home game rooms. Its 1931 hit, Baffle Ball, sold in huge numbers and proved that pinball could be affordable, repeatable, and exciting for everyday players.

Gottlieb’s biggest leap came in 1947 with Humpty Dumpty, the first pinball machine to use player-controlled flippers. That innovation changed pinball from a game of chance into a game of timing, skill, and strategy.

2. From Classic Gottlieb to Premier Technology

Through the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s, Gottlieb built a reputation for sharp artwork, memorable themes, and reliable gameplay. Collectors still admire wedgehead cabinet designs, electromechanical score reels, and early solid-state titles. When we discuss older games through our pinball repair work, Gottlieb machines often stand out because their engineering was practical and built to be played.

  • 1931: Baffle Ball helps launch pinball’s mass-market popularity.
  • 1947: Humpty Dumpty introduces flippers and reshapes the game.
  • 1980s: Premier Technology carries the Gottlieb name into a new era.

Premier Technology later continued producing games under the Gottlieb brand, adding modern electronics while preserving a respected name. For local collectors comparing eras, our pinball machines for sale show how much today’s hobby still owes to Gottlieb’s early leadership. From Baffle Ball to Premier-era titles, this manufacturer set the standard for what pinball could become.
