Basketball gameplay
The game begins by prompting the player to select one of 29 NBA teams. Each team has its own high score, and a qualifying score can replace that team's existing record. Basketball shots score one, two or three points depending on the situation.
The six main goals are 20 Points, Multiballs, Field Goals, Combination Shots, Power Hoops and Stadium Goodies. Completing them opens Trophy Multiball, where the player competes against a computer score for approximately one minute and can earn a Championship Ring by winning.
Multiball modes
The rules document describes two primary multiballs: Shoot Around and Around the World. Shoot Around is a two-ball multiball started by completing the S-H-O-O-T letters. Around the World is a three-ball multiball started by making shots from all four In the Paint positions.
The machine also includes Hoops Multiball as the fourth Power Hoops level. Trophy Multiball is a timed three-ball mode that resets the six main goals after the round ends.
Technical documentation
The contemporary technical-support page identifies NBA Fastbreak as a Midway Manufacturing Company game and documents revision 2.3 of the game ROM. The operations manual includes rules, playfield shots, switch locations, lamp locations and solenoid information for the machine.
