The Machine
Twilight Zone is a Bally solid-state electronic pinball machine manufactured in 1993. It is a four-player widebody model with a dot-matrix display.
Documentation distinguishes prototype features and software from production machines, supporting identification of this entry as the commercial production model rather than a prototype.
Playfield and Mechanisms
The playfield has four flippers: two conventional lower flippers, a full-length upper-right flipper and a shorter upper-left flipper. Its prominent mechanisms include an analog clock, a working gumball machine, orbit magnets and the raised Powerfield.
The Powerfield replaces conventional flippers with two player-controlled Magna-Flip magnets. The machine also uses a white ceramic Powerball, which reacts differently from the steel balls and is unaffected by magnets.
Gameplay
Major shots include the Player Piano, Slot Machine, Camera, Clock target, two ramps and two orbit shots called Spirals. The central Door tracks awards and progress toward Lost in the Zone.
Loading the gumball machine can release the Powerball. Returning that ball to the machine starts Powerball Mania, a three-ball mode in which the player can send balls to the magnetic Powerfield and attempt to collect Mania Jackpots.
